About The Event

In the UK, according to the Guardian, undergraduate science enrolments consisted of 52% male and 40% female. For postgraduates, the gap increases to 34% female and 46% male.  In 2014, physics A-levels 78.9% were male.

How can this gap be addressed, and what can be done to encourage girls and women to pursue scientific careers?

This event will go into detail about being a woman or girl in science. We will discuss with a panel of Women scientists how they got into their field, their advice, and their expertise.

More information about the panellists will be released in February.

Our History

AstroNoir started as a science communications website with the aim to make science accessible and inclusive for all. We cover topics related to natural sciences (ie Earth and space sciences), engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Since our start in 2020, we have posted plenty of blog posts, hosted talks, published videos, etc. Whilst we prioritise science outreach, we also want to help people throughout various sectors grow their connections; linking industry to academia and governments.

Mission Statement

Our mission at AstroNoir is to:

  • Amplify diverse voices in the natural and social science communities
  • Promote education for all, through accessible resources
  • Introduce students to industry professionals and government officials
  • Create hands-on events to encourage people from all backgrounds to build on their scientific knowledge

Inclusivity Statement

At AstroNoir we are committed to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the natural and social scientific communities. We understand that each individual possesses unique experiences, and we wish to amplify all voices. By embracing and respecting diversity, AstroNoir harbours the tremendous potential to encourage innovative ideas. In doing so, we hope to empower all of the communities that we represent.
